the pond is submerged
in soil. Make sure pond is level.
STEP 3
Cut slabs to various lengths.
Mark 150mm in from each end, and also
in centre of long lengths. At each mark,
drill a 12mm hole using a Speedbor.
STEP 4
Arrange slabs around pond.
Cut steel reo into 400mm lengths.
STEP 5
Hammer in rods so that they
finish flush with surface of slabs.
STEP 6
Put a pump with pipe in pond
centre, making sure pond is level. Put
2 Besser blocks in centre of pond and
4 pavers on top. This helps stabilise the
steel mesh that goes on top.
STEP 7
Cut 1 sheet of steel mesh
to fit shape of pond and cover pond
with filter fabric. Tuck extra mesh
underneath slabs. Cut a slit in centre
of mesh for upright pipe to fit through.
STEP 8
Turn fibreglass bowl over, find
centre and drill a 2mm, followed by a
4mm and then 13mm hole through
bowl. Put bowl upright on top of steel
mesh and extend upright pipe as
required. Check bowl is still level.
STEP 9
Seal around hole and pipe with
Selleys Knead It Aqua.
STEP 10
Backfill soil between slabs and
remove grass or weeds. Plant flowers
and small plants in soil. Place pine edging
around area to help retain gravel.
STEP 11
Add river gravel to soil, then
rake it over evenly.
STEP 12
Decorate around water feature
with polished pebbles, then distribute
lucky stones around your garden.
If
you would like to add extra interest
to your gravel garden, make the focal
point a water feature. To create a
walking area and draw the eye to the
water, lay timber slabs that radiate out
of the water feature. Plant up a mix of
flowers and succulents to finish.

■ Fountain pump
■ Steel mesh
■ Geotextile filter fabric
■ Selleys Knead It Aqua
■ H4 treated pine edging, to suit
■ 10-40mm Nepean river gravel
(1.5 tonnes)
■ 20kg bags polished pebbles (6)
■ Lucky stones (75-1 50mm)

Circular saw; angle grinder with metal
cutting disc; spirit level; drill; 2mm,
4mm and 13mm drill bits; 12mm
Speedbor; wheelbarrow; shovel; rake;
lump hammer; suitable plants
HERE’S HOW
STEP
1
Select a suitable area in
your garden, then mark with set-out
paint. Make sure it's large enough to
accommodate a water feature and a
surrounding planting area. Dig topsoil
to a depth of 10cm. Remove any
remaining grass or weeds with a rake,
and roughly level area.
STEP 2
Position pond in centre of area
and mark around its perimeter. Dig to a
